Medicina Silentium is a healthcare professionals for burnout prevention and stress management program, making Transcendental Meditation accessible to doctors, nurses, and other professionals working under high workloads. The initiative aims to provide participants with a tool that is easy to learn and can be incorporated into their daily lives, supporting inner balance, regeneration, and mental resilience.

The birth of the Medicina Silentium program

The program was conceived by pediatrician Dr. Bernadett Békési with the intention of making a method that had been of real help to her also available to healthcare professionals. Medicina Silentium is the Hungarian adaptation of the American Heal the Healers initiative, and was first launched at the Children's Clinic in Pécs in March 2025, initially with the participation of about 40 doctors.

The inspiration: Heal the Healers

This video talks about the "Heal the Healers" program launched in the USA during Covid and the experiences of doctors.

“The scientist in me was skeptical at first, but after the first teaching, I said that this is what we all need. To be there for the sick, to be there for the family. Transcendental Meditation gives me that deep down.”

We would like to put this tool in the hands of Hungarian healthcare workers, which is why this program is being launched in conjunction with research, so that, given its success, it can grow into a national program.

Implementation: the Hungarian experience

In a video filmed with the participants of the first enthusiastic group of pediatricians in Pécs, the doctors talked about the course and their first experiences.

“It’s a simple technique that everyone can learn. 2x20 minutes of meditation time per day is ideal and realistic. You can’t mess it up or do it wrong. You don’t have to visualize, focus, or use complicated things. It’s natural and easy. Its long-term effect is extremely beneficial. I would make it mandatory for everyone.”

Research

The project is unique in that it is not only a support program, but also linked to scientific research. The research team is also examining the participants' psychological state, hormonal-endocrinological indicators, and EEG changes to better understand the impact TM can have on reducing chronic stress, burnout, and mental overload.

Medicina Silentium is a particularly important initiative because the everyday lives of healthcare workers often involve extraordinary physical, emotional and mental strain. The program strives to make meditation not a theoretical option for them, but a real, practical support. The education takes place in an institutional environment, and joint participation can also strengthen the professional community.

For us, Medicina Silentium is a project that clearly demonstrates that Transcendental Meditation can serve not only individual development, but also help where peace, clarity and inner stability are most needed: in the lives of those who work for the healing of others every day. We hope that this initiative can contribute in the long term to ensuring that more and more doctors and nurses in the Hungarian healthcare system receive real support to prevent burnout.
